Reviews of "Puppet Motel"
I'm looking at - and playing with the Puppet Motel CD-ROM as I write this
(an another PowerMac, of course!).
I'm excited to say that the opening imagery and music is brand new stuff
that was in her show last night! I'm so glad.
The CD is highly and interactive in a unique way. It runs a bit slowly as
a result, but hey - it's REALLY cool. Some of the sound effects from her
SynthSuit are built into intractive sections of the graphics as you
manipulate them ....The manipulation of the screens and graphics sounds
and objects are not always immediately apparent - which is fine because
it's more interesting that way. Click on things that you have NO idea you
should click on and they change or bring up other things or audio
passages or images and stuff...even misty areas in a background may
instigate an effect or change an image to take you somewhere else.
Her violins are in there and you can interactively play them - at varying
speeds no less- a first I'm sure! Like Peter Gabriel's Xplora1, there are
things hidden all over.there is so much to this thing that I'm gonna go
now and play with it and sign off for now.
All Laurie Anderson freaks will LOVE this CD. It's a must-have...Bring
your brain!!!

Boy oh boy...
Got to fooling around w/ Puppet Motel after a three-week absence....
[I've been busy - and my very wonderful and multitalented father is
actually dying of a brain tumor in the hospital - this all just happened
out of the blue - and it's terrible.....but.....the quote at the bottom
by Laurie is now haunting me. Anyway this CD is diverting me from the
sadness of what is happening to me personally because of my dad.]
So -what a trip. This CD_ROM is incredible. Lot's of 'Laurisms' - art and
sounds and music and clips from recent times (Nerve Bible/Bright
Reb/Tighrope) and waaaaay back on earlier albums (Mr. Heartbreak) and
tours and stuff....
I THINK I FOUND THE secret 'TRAP DOOR.' too: I got into the 'green room
from the stage set (after seeing Laurie apppear in several different
'dissolve in' video segments about the stage show and design [including
the laser 'time tunnel'] which is interactive(!)...wow.
Anyway - I got into the green room and the puppet showed up and then I
accidently put him away...I hate it when I'm really onto some cool thing
and then I do that out of lack of experience navigating around....and I
clicked someplace and got onto the coffee table and somehow got into
Hsing's (the designer/programmer) notebook and it looks like all of the
Lingo MM Director 4.04 code is in there and I could actually edit it!
[But I am afraid to save any of it - tho I can't overwrite the CD, I
think the HD files/Puppet Motel Prefs may in fact be tracking me....so I
don't wanna wreck anything it is tracking. ]
Someday...
And there is SO much in here: i.e. acupuncture lessons, and THAT is
incredible interactive in itself.
My favorite stuff is the info, videos, and performances on the tour set!
This thing is brilliant.

it was like a whole library burned down....."

Got into a variation of the Hall of Time screen.......clicked around and
got Web address sites, (the CIA, Stanford, Chinese something or other and
many many more flashed by) and when I held the mouse down as they quickly
went by, the current one would freeze on screen so I could read it. I was
able to do this several times...of course she is talking and there is
changing music in the background....it graphics are stunning
here.......anyway one of the addresses looked like it MIGHT be an address
to Laurie that we haven't seen before....I could grab that on, but as I
tried and I got it to flash by again later - the program QUIT me out to
the Finder....did I discover something? Hmmmmm....
Did I get 'to close?'
Is this just a bug - or did my system just overload and quit.....?
I wish I could more easily retrace my steps..that seems very difficult -
I'm sure it's on purpose, too.
Also discovered a weird street scene with a big square shape underneath a
big tarpaulin. Tried to get the tarpulin off...the screen
disappeared.....dammit! I wanna get back there somehow try to get a look
at it a different way and check this thing out. It's very strange.
Also got into a 'secret package' address to one Laurie Anderson....it was
a child's book inside.....she wrote the original many years ago,
apparently....very dark and eerie...and illustrated like an Edward Gorey
book. Fascinating....didn't get to go thru the whole story - but it's
spooky.
This thing goes on and on.
Utterly amazing.
Puppet Motel is nothing short of BRILLIANT. I honestly do not know how
Hsing (the Chinese programmer/artist) pulled it off in just FOUR
months......hmmm.....of course Laurie conceived all of the material and
performed it all and dreamed up the original graphics, videos, music and
the like...a lot of material from her current world tour "Nerve Bible" is
on it....a lot.
And PM visually stunning and technically is so complex....content-wise
it's haunting.....spooky, even. I still am discovering new things in it
all the time....just about flipped one day recently when I got into the
Palm Reader Room, Breakfast Room and Psychiatrist's office all in the
same day - after nearly 2 months of using it....and there are a few
things I've seen that I have not been able to get back to.....and the
stage set has portions and I guess video yet to be discoverd by your
truly as well...Go get it!
