Phillip Glass
The definitive Glass is Einstein on the Beach. Every LA fan should try to
listen to this at least once. EOB came out in the mid seventies, and had a
big effect on Laurie's music (it had a big effect on the avant-garde in
general). The piece "It takes one to know one" is a direct reference to
EOB (the "It takes...It takes one..." technique comes straight from EOB
and there's an obvious reference in the one to/1 2 ambivalence).
A lot of Glass's music is difficult or just too strange to be approachable
for someone not into minimalism, but EOB is both intriguing and
supremely listenable.
