Abstract
We introduce the notion of visual case-based reasoning, i.e., reuse of
cases containing only visual knowledge. In this context, we explore
the problem of automated adaptation of diagrammatic cases, i.e.,
machine transfer of diagrammatic knowledge from a source case to a
target problem. We describe Galatea, a computer program, that adapts
diagrammatic cases given a mapping between the target problem and a
source case. Galatea explicitly represents knowledge states of the
source in the form of symbolic images, and uses spatial aggregations
and a taxonomy of primitive visual transformations to facilitate
knowledge transfer.
